Matt Szymanski, President and Music Director
Hi, I'm Matt, the music director of Phoenix. In 2013 I graduated from New England Conservatory with a Masters in Orchestral Conducting following two years of studies with Hugh Wolff. From 2011 to 2014 I served with the Handel and Haydn Society as a conducting apprentice to Harry Christophers and was also the assistant conductor for the New England Conservatory Youth Symphony. In 2013 I was honored to be named a finalist for the prestigious New World Orchestra Conducting Fellowship with Michael Tilson Thomas. More recently, in the summer of 2014 I was the assistant conductor for Odyssey Opera's performances of Mascagi's Zanetto and Wolf-Ferrari's Il Segreto di Susanna with Gil Rose
During the summer of 2013 I toured Central American with Maestro Carlos Prieto and the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. The tour was a fantastic chance to brush up on my long-dormant Spanish skills, but more importantly it was a summer spent watching audiences that had never been to a live orchestra concert fall in love with classical music. Upon returning to the United States I found myself back in a world where orchestras were struggling to reach new audiences. Coming from a non-musical family and running in a lot of non-musical circles, I wanted desperately to make the art form that I loved so deeply less impenetrable to my friends. In September of 2014 I founded Phoenix with the mission of revitalizing the orchestral concert format to make our music more accessible to new listeners.
